Sea Ice Geophysical Measurements from Seasat to the Present, with an Emphasis on Ice Motion: a Brief Review and a Look Ahead
NASA launched Seasat in June 1978 carrying a remarkable array of microwave instruments designed to observe the global oceans, including an active microwave altimeter, scatterometer, and SAR along with a passive microwave radiometer. While the satellite mission ended abruptly in mid-October 1978 after only about 100 days of operation, unique and comprehensive views of the oceans were obtained th...
متن کاملSerendipity in the Use of Satellite Scatterometer, SAR, and Other Sensor Data
hen marine geophysical measurements reach resolutions of ten to hundreds of meters over 1000-km regions, a new realm of analysis is opened. Such data did not exist prior to Seasat in 1978. However, the value of these data has been neglected for almost two decades. The reasons are many: Star Wars, modeler indifference, fear of a new form of data where empiricism reigns, and numerical model mysti...
متن کاملSpaceborne SAR Antennas for Earth Science
Before the development of the first synthetic aperture radar (SAR) antenna flown in space, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was involved in an aircraft radar program to image the Earth surface for various science applications. This radar was flown on a Convair CV-990 aircraft with the antenna attached to one of the baggage doors of the airplane. The antenna was a planar array with eight radiatin...
متن کاملA Review of the Three-dimensional Field Displacement Retrieval Methods Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Observations (InSAR) With Emphasis on the Precision of Each of these Methods
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology provides a useful tool for quantitatively measuring the deformation of the earth, influenced by natural factors (earthquake, subsidence, and landslide) and human factors (construction of structures, drilling, and the overexploitation of underground water aquifers). In this context, time-series analysis of radar images allows the monito...
متن کاملPhysicochemical and Emulsifying Properties of Barijeh (Ferula gumosa) Gum
Ferula gumosa Boiss is one of the natural plants of Iran whose exudates (Barijeh) can be used in food industry. In the present study the properties of the gum extracted from tubers of Ferula gumosa were examined. For this purpose, gum was extracted from crude exudates by alcoholic extraction with 90% (v/v) ethanol. The purity of gum was relatively high, and it was composed mostly ...
